After the Tower — a walkable afternoon route
You've done the visit. It's 15:30, you have a few hours of light, and the metro is three minutes away. Don't take it. Here's what walking distance looks like from the Pilier Est.
The route (approximately 2.5 hours)
1. Pilier Est to Pont d'Iéna (10 min)
Quick pass through the gardens, then the short bridge for Trocadéro-side photos if you haven't taken them yet.
2. Trocadéro to Palais de Chaillot's rooftops (20 min)
The esplanade is a tourist carnival, but the Palais de Chaillot's eastern wing has a quieter upper terrace most people miss.
3. Across to Musée du Quai Branly (15 min walk back east)
Underrated anthropology museum with a Jean Nouvel green facade and a surprisingly good café in a jungle-garden setting. Skip the full-ticket entrance for a 45-minute wander in the gardens alone.
4. Along the Seine to Pont de l'Alma (25 min)
Flame of Liberty replica on the far end — the de facto Diana memorial. Peaceful crossing, river boats passing underneath.
5. Rue Saint-Dominique for a late lunch (15 min walk south)
Our favourite streets in the 7th. Pastries at Du Pain et Des Idées would be a detour; here we usually stop at the small bistros around Église Saint-Pierre-du-Gros-Caillou. Reservations rarely needed in the afternoon.
What to skip from the walking map
- Les Égouts tour — the sewer museum. Interesting on paper, miss-able in practice.
- Rodin's garden if time is tight — gorgeous but a 25-minute walk off the Seine axis.
- Shopping on Rue Cler at midday — queues at the famous fromageries aren't worth the time cost. Come after 15:00.
Transport options at the end
Line 8 at La Tour-Maubourg, Line 13 at Varenne, or walk another 15 minutes to Les Invalides for RER C. Taxi hails fine on Rue Saint-Dominique.
