Reader questions, answered

The questions we receive most from readers planning their first visit.

Do I actually need to pre-book?
In off-season, no — you can walk up and buy at the caisses with a short wait. In high season, yes, especially for Summit tickets, which can sell out two days in advance.
Can I bring a backpack or shopping bag?
Small day bags pass through security. Suitcases and anything larger than a cabin-size bag are refused — there's no cloakroom. Store it at your hotel or at Luggage Hero / Nannybag before coming.
What time is the sparkle?
Five minutes on the hour, every hour, from dusk until 01:00 (02:00 in summer). The final hour of the night is a sparkle-only version without main lighting.
Is the view really better from the Summit than the second floor?
On a clear day, yes — meaningfully. You can see the Mont Valérien and the far western Parisian horizon. On a hazy or cloudy day, the second floor is 90% of the experience for 60% of the price.
What's open at the Tower besides the viewing platforms?
Two restaurants (Madame Brasserie on the first floor, Le Jules Verne on the second), a champagne bar at the Summit, two macaron shops, and three gift shops. There's also a small museum at the first floor with a replica of Gustave Eiffel's office.
Can I take a drone photo?
No. Paris is a drone-free zone and the Tower itself is a protected security site. Enforcement is active, and fines are large.
Is there Wi-Fi?
Free Wi-Fi on the first and second floors, 15-minute sessions. Signal at the Summit is unreliable. Download your audio guide app at ground level before going up.
What's the best thing to do straight after the Tower visit?
If it's late afternoon: walk down to Pont Alexandre III via Les Invalides. If it's morning: coffee at Carette on Trocadéro, then the Musée du Quai Branly. See our afternoon walking route for the detailed version.
