Skip-the-line, decoded — what the fast-pass actually bypasses
Every reseller sells 'skip-the-line'. In reality there are three different queues at the Eiffel Tower, and most fast-pass tickets only cover one of them. Here's a frank breakdown.
The three queues you'll meet
- Security — the bag check at the pillar entrances. This queue is unavoidable. No ticket bypasses it, pre-booked or otherwise.
- Lift access — the big queue people photograph. Pre-booked timed tickets have a dedicated lane here, which is often 10–20% of the open-ticket length.
- Summit transfer — the second-floor to Summit lift. Everyone goes through this one. Even premium tickets.
Ticket types and what they do
Official timed-entry (recommended)
Direct from the official billetterie. Puts you in the pre-booked lane for lift access. Does not bypass security. Does not bypass the Summit transfer queue. By far the best value.
Third-party 'skip-the-line' resellers
These typically bundle an official timed-entry with a tour guide. You still use the pre-booked lane, you still queue for security, but you now also wait for your group to assemble at a meeting point. Marked up by about 40–80%.
Private guided-tour operators
Legitimate operators have small-group access windows and can time the Summit transfer around the quieter minutes. Can genuinely save 20–30 minutes on a peak day. Expect €90–140 per adult.
What actually saves the most time
- Book official timed-entry 2–3 weeks ahead for a 09:00 or post-19:30 slot.
- Arrive 20 minutes before your window — the pre-booked lane staff open the next slot early when they see demand.
- Carry a day bag only — large bags go to a separate screening line that doubles your security wait.
- If visiting with kids under 4, you're entitled to a priority lane for the lift transfer. Ask staff — many families don't know.
When fast-pass is actually worth it
Honestly? Rare cases. A tight cruise schedule where you can't afford a 40-minute buffer. A business trip where you need to be back for a 20:00 dinner. A mobility consideration where standing is painful. Otherwise an official timed-entry plus one of our timing picks will serve you better.
